Our Biggest Fundraiser

On May 17, 2011, more than 250 people attended Bountiful Bowls, the primary fundraiser for Rachel’s Table. The event raised more than $60,000 to help alleviate hunger in the greater Springfield area.

This year’s Bountiful Bowls paid tribute to the memory of Daydie Hochberg, one of Rachel's Table's most dedicated volunteers. Daydie’s husband Bruce shared the honor. The evening also honored John Davis and the Irene E. and George A. Davis Foundation for their ongoing support of Rachel’s Table. The Davis Foundation contributes to the Gleaning Program, in which young people from across the region collect surplus produce from local farms and bring it directly to shelters and food pantries.

The event featured a kosher buffet, a silent auction and a live “Rent-a-Mensch” auction in which local comedian David Rosen auctioned off the services of ten generous people. This year’s “Mensches” included Red Sox announcer Carl Beane, who promised a personal tour of Fenway Park along with four tickets to a game, and Delaney House owner Peter Rosskothen, who donated a dinner for ten people at his restaurant.

Every year, Rachel’s Table donates over 300,000 pounds of food to 43 agencies. In the past year, Rachel’s Table has seen an increase of 20-40% in the number of people it serves. In the greater Springfield area alone, nearly 50% of school-age children are “food insecure”- they aren’t sure where their next meal is coming from. Thanks to the generous support of the community, Rachel’s Table can meet these challenges head-on, donating over 300,000 pounds of food a year.
